A brief history of archery and how it is deeply embedded in Islamic tradition
Archery
Archery is a deeply respected and an encouraged practice in Islam, which is considered a Sunnah (tradition of Prophet Muhammad - peace be upon him). It serves not only as a means of physical and mental discipline, but also as an act of worship and spiritual focus.
Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) was a very skilled archer and it is reported that he owned six bows in his lifetime with one of his bows still available to be viewed inside the Topkapi Museum in Istanbul, Türkiye.
Islam
The history of archery in Islam began long before the time of Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him). It is believed that God sent Angel Gabriel with a bow, a bowstring and two arrows to be given to Prophet Adam (peace be upon him), to kill the birds that were stealing his crops.
In Sahih Muslim, Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said, “Practice archery and practice horse riding, and that you practice archery is more beloved to me than that you practice riding.” This shows a strong importance of archery as a Muslim.
